This charmingly rustic and genuine Menorquin farmhouse is believed to have been built in the mid 19th century. It retains many original architectural features. Although attached to a similar property, its high block and drystone walls encompass a large plot and provide a good level of privacy. The house is approached by a lane, and the entrance drive opens into a very large marés (limestone) terrace area, towards the rear of which is situated the house. One enters the house through the extensive outside covered dining terrace which comes into a large hall that runs virtually the whole length of the front elevation of the house - very typical of Menorquin farmhouses of this era. At the end and to the left of the hall is a bedroom with four-poster double bed and fitted wardrobes. Also off the hallway is the sitting/dining room. This room is traditionally styled and furnished, with two two-seater settees, an antique marble-topped oak dining table and six chairs, side and coffee tables. It is has TV with access to SKY free-to-view English language channels, and a portable CD player. To the centre of the entrance hall a narrow stone staircase ascends to the first floor; immediately to the right is a bathroom, to the rear of which is a utility area which accommodates the washing machine. There are two twin bedrooms on the upper level - the first has fitted wardrobes and French door opening on to a balcony, large enough to accommodate chairs or a sunbed, and offering very pleasant views over the lovely village of Pou Nou. At the end of a short corridor on the upper level is the other bedroom, again with twin beds, fitted wardrobes and bedside tables. Back on the ground floor, there is a large family bathroom - like that on the first floor maintained in good order and in the traditional rustic style. To the right and at the end of the entrance hallway is the farmhouse style kitchen/breakfast room, which has a gas hob, separate electric oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, toaster, electric kettle, juicer and liquidiser/mixer. In the breakfast area there is a pine table and four matching stools, and a typical farmhouse pinewood display cabinet. A door from this area leads to the outside covered dining terrace. Externally, this property offers a tranquil, timeless and peaceful atmosphere. The large covered dining terrace has a long rectangular pine table and six chairs, and there is a large brick-built BBQ and chimney. Across the extensive slabbed terrace - on which there are several large palm and pine trees providing welcome shade - there is a drystone wall enclosure with a Menorquin farmhouse gate, within which is the attractive 9x4m irregular shaped pool with Roman steps. The pool is surrounded by tiled terracing, with sunbeds, patio table and chairs, and parasol. Borders surround the bottom of the drystone walls with many mature shrubs, plants and flowers, providing lovely fragrant and colourful surroundings. This simple but charming and original Menorquin farmhouse will appeal to those wanting something different from the noise and commercialism of the purpose-built resort, preferring instead to experience the atmosphere and unique charm of a Menorquin home of a bygone age. Because it was constructed and still retains the original materials used in those days - in particular the local marés (megalithic-sized limestone blocks hewn from local quarries), it is not unusual for its whitewashed walls to part company with their paint! All part of the fun and charm of experiencing a part of Menorca's historic past. Monday change-over. Pou Nou is a genuinely old Menorquin farming hamlet, now a sought-after residential area. It is just two minutes from the historic local town of Sant Lluis and its numerous shops, bars and restaurants. Within 10 minutes drive there is a choice of a number of beaches and resort facilities, including Binibeca, S'Algar, Alcaufar and Punta Prima. Pou Nou provides a perfect base for a holiday in Menorca - a peaceful and secluded retreat, though close enough to larger resorts, including Mahon, when needed. |
